Vintage Design

Antique 16th century Fireplace back plate with Lorraine Cross with stamps of the Dukes of Lorraine and their wifes. The first back plates were cast circa 1500. Initially this happened in a mold made in sand. The mold consisted of a sand bed in which decorations were printed with loose objects such as a piece of string, tools or utensils. A little later, these were loose stamps. Such plates made with loose stamps in the sand are therefore unique.
