Camber stool, Paul Coenen Dimensions: W 47 x D 37 x H 45 cm Materials: Stainless steel The Camber bench and stool originated from the idea of manufacturing a piece of furniture from a single piece of sheet metal. The inclining angle of the seat formed the basis for the rest of the design, with each cut and fold having the same 5 degree angle. Starting with a flat rectangle, two angular cuts are made. The first three folds are then made lengthwise by machine, after which the legs are finally bend into the right angle by hand. Borders of assembly The manufacturing industry is using standard sized material, and every machine used works according to these sizes. Instead of seeing this as a limitation, it became an inspiration to search for new possibilities. Sheet metal is often folded to rule out it’s flexible properties and to create stiffness in the material. This flexibility can also be used in our advantage. By combining this feature together with high precision manufacturing, a form language evolved: the flexibility of metal is used to lock pieces together due to the sheet’s force of bending back to it’s original shape. Every piece of furniture is made out of a standard size sheet of 1000 by 2000 millimeters.
