Simon Hasan
London, United Kingdom
Designer Simon Hasan was born in England in 1973. He studied at the Royal College of Arts in London under Jürgen Bay and Ron Arad between 2006 and 2008, graduating with a Master’s degree in Design Products. His graduation project, a collection of leather vases and furniture called Cuir Bouilli, innovatively used the medieval armor-making technique of the same name, and earned Hasan widespread acclaim. Between 2004 and 2008, Hasan also worked as an account director for Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO across a variety of high-level clients, including Procter & Gamble, Motorola, and Sainsbury’s.
In 2008, Hasan launched his eponymous studio to focus on one-of-a-kind and batch-produced furniture and accessories for international exhibition and sale. His work is characterized by a combination of historical research and hands-on experimentation, simultaneously embracing ancient craft processes and industrial design, and often involving complex layering of materials and techniques. In addition to his own range of self-branded pieces, Hasan’s client list includes leading international galleries as well as brands like Fendi, Kvadrat, and Poltrona Frau. In 2011, Hasan was invited to participate in the London Design Museum’s highly regarded Designers in Residence program, and his mannequins for Fendi earned him a 2012 Wallpaper* Design Award.
Since 2008, Hasan has served as a visiting tutor to MA and BA product and furniture design students at Kingston University in London. In 2011, he was invited by Fendi and the RCA Design Products department to be a visiting tutor for a collaborative project between Fendi and first-year Design Products students to celebrate the opening of the brand's new store in London. Since 2012, he has run Platform 19 of the Master’s Design Products course at the Royal College of Art with Alexander Taylor.
Hasan lives and works in London.
