Bureau Chest of Drawers, Directory Style, Walnut Wood, around 1800 – France
Wonderful Directory period bureau, made in France around the year 1800, in an amazing walnut wood. Simple structure, it is configured in two registers and a folding door at the top, the desk itself. Straight profile that contrasts with the only curved element present on the skirt and handles.

When the upper door opens the furniture becomes a desk. A bureau with coral red embossed leather is then displayed. When opened, a multitude of drawers appear, distributed in two rows of three on the sides. Hollow central part to store belongings, as well as a hallway at the top. In the central area, also, a secret drawer.

It is a very special piece that fits into any room, even blending with the design as a contrast and giving character to the room. Walnut is a noble and resistant wood, valued for its durability and beautiful grain.

During this time, France was experiencing significant political and social changes, which was reflected in furniture with a more rational and functional approach. The symmetry in the design of the drawers and the balanced proportion of the furniture as a whole are key characteristics of classic furniture of these eras. Unlike previous styles, such as Rococo, the Directory is characterized by a more moderate decoration. The drawer pulls and legs feature simple geometric details and classic motifs.

The Directory style is a style of furniture and decoration that developed in France during the period in which The Directory was in force (1795-1799) and marks the transition between the Louis XVI and Empire styles. It is a neoclassical-inspired style, characterized by the simplicity of its lines, inspired by Roman objects from the 1st century AD. C., from the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This resurgence of classicist taste was latent in painting, furniture and fashion, especially in women's clothing.
