Excellent oil on panel by the Valladolid painter Gabino Gaona (Valladolid, 1933- Valladolid, 2007). Framed. Gabino Gaona, known for his landscapes, rural scenes, bullfighting aesthetics and the recreation of coastal environments, was born in Valoria la Buena (Valladolid) in 1933. He channeled his early vocation for painting in Madrid, where he received drawing classes at the Escuela Superior of Fine Arts of San Fernando and in the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
The Valladolid capital, where he lived, was the scene of his first exhibitions at the Meseta Bookstore, the Town Hall and the Santa Cruz College with paintings characterized by the melancholy that he gave to his landscapes, generally in darkness and with curved and undulating brushstrokes.
Gaona's sinuous and curvilinear lines evolved towards more concise and geometric forms around 1962, a year before receiving the City of Valladolid National Painting Prize. At the same time that he schematized the shapes, the colors lit up in paintings where he incorporated towns, animals and men as elements of the landscape in addition to nature.
In 1979 he set up his studio and residence in Simancas (Valladolid), where he coincided with an artistic circle that also included the painters Félix Cuadrado-Lomas and Domingo Criado. His most pessimistic, sad and even dramatic canvases belong to this stage, with figures twisted and collapsed by the weight of their own existence.
Gabino Gaona, who always considered himself an author without a defined style due to the lack of schools and teachers who set trends, fluctuated between abstraction and figuration but never reaching realism.
During the last years of his life, skeptical and detached from fashions, he observed within painting a spiritual decadence and a preponderance of materialism in the creators, more concerned with money than with the creation itself, as he commented in an interview with the Efe Agency in May 1997.
The Simancas Group was a group of artists and intellectuals who, at the end of the 70s, sought to expand the horizons of local culture in Valladolid and thus make Castilla wider. In reality, the small town of Simancas was the last point where these friends settled, but they began their journey at the Relieve Bookstore, located on the central Pucelana street, Cánovas del Castillo. The group's validity will extend for two decades. There were six most relevant painters: Francisco Sabadell (1922-1971), Félix Cuadrado Lomas (1930-2021), Fernando Santiago (1932-2017), Gabino Gaona (1933-2007), Domingo Criado (1935-2007) and Jorge Vidal (1943-2006).
As already indicated, this group was a meeting of friends and there was no founding manifesto, but only a common intention: to bring fresh and personal art to Castilla. Without common approaches in terms of aesthetics, each member had different educational background and concerns, something palpable in their artistic productions. However, they were united in the plastic by a great independence in terms of what was established in Valladolid society, where the academic and bourgeois reigned. They sought to explore different languages of modernity, relying on historical avant-garde that were not yet completely assimilated in this environment.
