Vintage Design

This small-sized model of Earth is fixed on its base with the natural axial tilt. On the surface of the globe there is a political and physical world map from the early 1940s. The globe can be considered an object of Art Deco style, thanks to its simple and geometrical base made of brown Bakelite. The model of Earth is fixed in a metal semi-meridian. It has a label naming the producer Columbus Verlag Paul Oestergaard K.g., Berlin – Lichterfelde 1941, with additional information on the author (cartographer) reading “Bearbeitet Von Oberrealschuldirektor Dr. R. Neuse; Neurevidiert Von Kartograph C. Luther”in German.

Columbus publishing company was established in 1909 by Oestergaard brothers. For many years it was the world leader in the production of globes.

The word “globe” comes from Latin word “globus” meaning a ball or a sphere. The first globe depicting Earth was made in Greece around 150 BC by Crates of Mallus.

Item will be left in its packaging after delivery.
