H. Post, 5 Horse Carriage/Team, Oil Painting, Early 20th Century, Framed

Expressive stately painting in XXL format.

This wonderful antique painting in oil on canvas is offered.
German, around 1900-1920 with an older historical model.
The picture, which is signed Cop.H.Post, impresses with its lively choice of motifs in combination with its enormous size and patina. Just as suitable for horse lovers as it is as a solo object in a modern apartment.

The artist is probably the Düsseldorf painter Johann Bernhard Hermann Post, who lived from 1879-1970.

The picture, including the original frame, has an enormous size of 138 x 98 cm with a depth of 9 cm!! Something that, even back then, was more likely to be found in a stately home than in a normal apartment.
The picture itself measures 114 x 74 cm.

The motif depicts 2 coachmen with their carriage pulled by 5 horses in a wild environment as darkness falls. The horses are also wild, creating enormous drama, speed and tension, which the coachman can hardly seem to control.
This speed is also reflected in the painting style used by Post. You can see the quick brush strokes that skilfully capture the action-packed movement of the horses.
The choice of motif is a classic scene in art, which has been chosen again and again by many artists over the centuries.
Like many artists of the time, these older, well-known artists and works of art studied in museums and exhibitions. It was quite common for well-known works to be repainted in his style as learning and teaching objects. This is also the case here, where Post was probably based on an Eastern European painting and therefore signed Cop. for copy (in the old spelling with "C") in front of his name.

The painting is fundamentally in its original condition with a certain patina, which also gives the picture a certain mysticism - especially in the context of the wild horses. It is quite dark and still has the old varnish. We photographed it outside due to its size and the necessary light. It is darker in the apartment (see last picture) and ideally needs light (near the window or artificially). In many cases we have our pictures cleaned, removed from the old varnish and, depending on the motif, reframed.
Here we consciously decided against it because the combination of motif, patina and size is absolutely magnificent.
The golden frame is wonderfully simple compared to the motif and also has a contrasting color, so that both complement each other perfectly.
If the new owner wants the old varnish removed and cleaned by a restorer, a brighter image will of course be obtained. Both are possible and have their justification

Due to its size, the picture is ideal as a solitaire object, even if you don't have any classic oil paintings yet. Whether in an antique furnished, or as an elegant break in style in a modern household, as well as in a historic building...it fits everything.
