Oddysey Light Grey Large Headrest Armchair by Eugeni Quitllet Dimensions: D 75 x W 81 x H 111 cm. Materials: Polyurethane foam, steel, felt, leather and fabric. Other materials available. A flexible moulded polyurethane injected foam body, seat cushion and headrest. Both the body and headrest have an integral steel structure. Two adjustable headrest options. Upholstery choices: Monochrome in any of the fabrics and leathers offered by BD. Colour duo combination: The top, seat cushion and headrest are upholstered in the same fabric or leather, and the lower external base are upholstered in another fabric or leather from the BD catalogue. Aluminium swivel base and tilting mechanism in two colours: Matte black or polished die-cast aluminium. Felt glides. Eugeni Quitllet is designing for his idea of the future. Passionate about science and an avid space enthusiast, Quitllet began his career in the imaginative environment of art school in the Balearic Islands, followed by a diploma in Design and Interior Design here in Barcelona. Back home for the summer, he met Philippe Starck on Formentera, and quickly began work at his agency in Paris. Ten years later, after having created some of the most interesting designs of the early ‘00s, he opened his own agency in Barcelona. His influences range from Science Fiction to Art Nouveau, the Odyssey chair being a perfect example of both combined, its kinetic and sculptural qualities coming together in a fluid silhouette to beautifully envelop the human body. Beauty, he says, will save the world after all. BD Barcelona In 1972, a group of young architects and designers from Barcelona started BD. Our aim was to produce and market furniture and objects for our own projects, with complete creative freedom and design criteria—both in shape and in function—that was different from the sector norm. We began coming up with designs, inspired by our contemporaries, from Ettore Sottsass in Italy to Álvaro Siza Viera in Portugal. Here in Spain, we were supported by those seeking something other than what was on the market at the time. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today. The BD brand has been enriched by all the designs we’ve produced. The result is a sum of many things—memory, tradition, and respect for the classics, as well as talent, innovation, a sense of humour, and a lot of imagination.

About the Creator

Ettore Sottsass

Born in Innsbruck, Austria in 1917, architect-designer Ettore Sottsass grew up in Milan. He studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Turin, graduating in 1939. As a member of the Italian army, Sottsass spent most of World War II in a Yugoslavian concentration camp. After the war, he returned to Milan and opened his first studio in 1947. Like most Italian designers in these years, he focused on activities to help the postwar reconstruction efforts, including exhibition design.

In 1958, he began working with Olivetti, for whom he designed multiple landmark objects—including Valentine, the brand’s iconic 1969 red plastic typewriter—and transformed the large, cold electronics and office machinery of the day into playful, accessible objects of desire.

During the 1960s, Sottsass spent time in both India, where he was deeply affected by the country’s vibrant colors and mythologies, and the U.S., where he embraced pop art culture. These influences can be seen in Sottsass's ceramic designs through the rest of his life.

In 1973, he cofounded Global Tools, an experimental design collective, alongside Gaetano Pesce, Alessandro Mendini, and others. During the ’70s, he collaborated with Alessi, Baccarat, and Knoll, designing everyday items like condiment sets and decanters. Other manufacturers that Sottsass designed for include Artemide, Bitossi, Oluce, Poltronova, Skipper, Stilnovo, and Zanotta.

In 1980, he formed the architecture/design firm Sottsass Associati. In 1981, he founded the Memphis Group, an influential, flamboyant design firm known for its brightly colored post-modern furniture, ceramics, and lighting. He remained with the Group until 1985, at which point he turned his attentions again to architecture. He died at the age of 90.
