Wilhelm Wagenfeld Tea Set For Jenaer Glasswerke Circa 1930s. The set comprises of 2 saucers, 1 cup and 1 teapot - Designed by Wilhelm Wagenfeld - Produced by Jenaer Glasswerke - German ~ 1930s - Cup measures 12cm wide - Saucers measures 16cm and 20cm wide - Teapot measures 29cm wide x 15cm x 15cm tall Wilhelm Wagenfeld Wilhelm Wagenfeld completed an apprenticeship at the design office of the Bremen silverware factory of Koch & Bergfeld during the First World War. In addition, he attended the local applied arts school from 1916 to 1919. Between 1919 and 1922, he received a scholarship to the State Design Academy of Hanau/Main and trained to become a silversmith. In 1923, he set up a workshop at the Barkenhoff in Worpswede with Bernhard Hoetger and Heinrich Vogeler. This is also the year that he began studying at the State Bauhaus in Weimar. During this time, Wagenfeld designed works such as his famous Bauhaus lamp in 1924. After the dissolution of the Bauhaus Weimar on 1 April 1925, he became a member of the German Werkbund and accepted the position of assistant to Richard Winkelmayer, the head of the metal workshop at the State Academy of Crafts and Architecture in Weimar. In 1928, he took over the direction of these metal workshops. He and many of the other teachers at the academy were fired in 1930 at the insistence of the NSDAP party, which was represented in the Thuringian Landtag. Starting in 1930, this was followed by freelance work and a commission from the Thuringian Economics Ministry to supervise independent glassblowers. In addition, he was asked to begin teaching at the State Art Academy Grunewaldstrasse in Berlin-Schöneberg in 1931 and began working as a freelance employee of the Jena Schott & Gen. glass factory at that time. from 1935 to 1947, he was the artistic director of the United Lausitzer Glass Works (Vereinigte Lausitzer Glaswerke) in Weisswasser/Oberlausitz. In 1937, his work exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition was distinguished with the Grand Prix. The same award was bestowed on him in 1940 by the Milan Triennale. Following his military service in 1944 and war imprisonment in 1945, Wagenfeld returned to Weisswasser. He subsequently received numerous appointments to academies. This included a lectureship at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts through Hans Scharoun, as well as the directorship for the Typing and Standardisation Department at the Institute for Civil Engineering at the German Academy of the Sciences. In 1949, Wagenfeld was given a position as a consultant for industrial design at the Württemberg State Office of Trade in Stuttgart. Between 1950 and 1977, he collaborated with the Württemberg Metal Works (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik AG, WMF) in Geislingen. He founded the Experimental and Developmental Workshop for Industry Models in Stuttgart in 1954, which existed until 1978. This is where designs were created for many industrial enterprises such as the Rosenthal-Porzellan AG, the Peill & Putzler Glashüttenwerke GmbH, the Braun Company and the Pelikan factory. from 1955 Wilhelm Wagenfeld began to design for Lindner. Ceiling, wall, corner and mirror lights. Condition Report No damage at all and all pieces retain their original Jenaer label on the underside.

About the Creator

Wilhelm Wagenfeld

Born in Bremen, Germany in 1900, Wilhelm Wagenfeld was an important pioneer of modernist design. At age 16, he began an apprenticeship in industrial drafting at the Koch & Bergfeld silverware workshop in Bremen. After the end of the First World War, he received a scholarship to study at the Fachschule für Edelmetalle / Hanau Drawing Academy.

In 1923, Wagenfeld enrolled in the legendary Bauhaus school in Weimar, where he studied metalworking under László Moholy-Nagy and Christian Dell. Wagenfeld’s most iconic design came out of his first year at the Bauhaus: A glass and chrome table lamp, a.k.a. the MT8 or the Bauhaus Lamp, co-designed by Wagenfeld and Carl Jacob Jucker circa 1923 for production in the Bauhaus Metal Workshop. According to the V&A, the first of these lamps were produced in the spring of 1924 and, by the autumn of that year, at least 80 had been produced with a metal base and 45 with a glass base. Production of the lamp continued at the Dessau Bauhaus and, from 1928, both versions were produced under license by Schwintzer & Graff in Berlin. In 1930, Bunter & Remmeler in Frankfurt began producing a variant model, and in 1931 Wagenfeld reworked the design and a further version was produced by Architekturbedarf in Dresden. Today, the lamp is produced by German manufacturer Technolumen.

When the Bauhaus relocated to Dessau in 1925, Wagenfeld took a position in the metal workshops of the Staatliche Bauhochschule Weimar, where he eventually became the director—between 1928 until it was closed by the Nazis in 1930. Wagenfeld then began working for Jenaer Glaswerk Schott & Gen in Mainz, where he produced an enduring tableware collection in heat-resistant glass (ca. 1932). Later in the 1930s, Wagenfeld designed his famous, stackable Kubis Storage Containers (1938) for Vereinigte Lausitzer Glaswerke.

During the Second World War, Wagenfeld was deemed hostile to the Nazi Party and sent to the Eastern front to fight. Captured by the Russians, he finished the war in a Russian camp.

Following the war, Wagenfeld returned to a prominent position within the German design community, receiving numerous teaching appointments alongside commissions from design brands like Braun, Hutschenreuther, Fürstenberg, and Rosenthal.

Wagenfeld’s timelessly simple designs have received several awards, including the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Fair in Paris and at 1940 Milan Triennale. For more insight into to his unique design approach, check out his 1948 book of essays, Wesen und Gestalt.

Today you can find a museum dedicated to Wagenfeld’s work, along with a design school named in Wagenfeld’s honor, in his hometown of Bremen.
